Two Days Later: Prelude to an Apocalypse? I doubt it.
It's the day after a day that, after 9/11, seems almost as surreal. At work, hardly anyone spoke about it. People looked as if their pets, even if they didn't own one, had died.
Kerry had conceded. Bush was now President. Again.
Despite sending us into war with concocted evidence against an irrelevant enemy, despite joking about it at a wealthy dinner, despite advocating policies of so-called security that undermine this country's foundation, despite allowing corporations to dictate how we live, despite a completely underfunded war that has put our troops in more than necessary danger, that has caused a fire of hatred to uprise against us, with no strategy to win other than Faith, despite a complete vacuum-cleaning of domestic policy, sucking out money for schools & poor people so that the rich can buy more stuff and they can raise oil prices, despite a much much longer list of reasons why our government needed new Leaders...
Slightly more than half of the voters chose Bush again, believing the Lies, believing Iraq had anything to do with 9/11, believing in so-called moral values (i.e. conservative ideas about women and homosexuals). Karl Rove was a genius for scaring the religious into voting.
Me? I'm scared of Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Rove, and the minions of Fundamentalist "Christians" now in power. They are scarier to me than the equally Fundamentalist "Islamists", who in much smaller numbers, are willing to blow themselves up if it will kill an American or two.
But as the quote goes, "this too shall pass." No, it won't be easy. We have to fight our gut reaction to flee to Canada or fear Apocalypses. Already I have one friend who is pondering suicide. Another has decided God hates us and wants us all to die. Neither is a good choice.
The good news is Bush can't get re-elected after his second term.
The good news is that it was not a landslide by any means.
The good news is that while things are grim now, we've had other grim moments before and made it through.
The good news is that the Youth our on our side and the elder conservatives will die, eventually.
The good news is we've learned how to mobilize using the Internet and raise more money and react faster than any previous generation could ever hope to.
So don't give up. We have an upcoming fight on our hands, and we will win. Cancel that order for an Apocalypse.
