Two Great Tastes Songs that Taste Sound Great Together.

The mash-up, a musical recording in which the lyrics or melody of one song are overlayed on top of the music of another, is becoming more common with new software tools like Sony Acid and Ableton Live. They make the process a lot easier by letting you tweak tempo and pitch independently.

Actually, the concept is not totally new. The late Victor Borgé combined "Happy Birthday" with a piece by Franz Liszt during his comedic piano concerts.

I'm starting to play with the obvious mash-ups, the ones in which two songs are so musically similar that playing them together sounds good. Two that come to mind are:

All the Things She Said (TATU) vs. Just the Two of Us (Grover Washington, Jr. & Bill Withers)

Oye Como Va (Santana) vs. Evil Ways (Santana) vs. It's Too Late (Carole King)

I'll have some clips up soon.
