My New Favorite Artists

Sorry Tim Biskup. Sorry Amanda Visell. My two new favorite artists are Lynne Naylor and Chris Reccardi.

I drove for two hours and twenty minutes yesterday to Palm Springs just to see Amanda's and Tim's work, and maybe see some other cool stuff. But seriously, all the attention went to Lynne and Chris. Even Shag's work was relegated to a tiny dimly-lit corner/hallway in between the two galleries. I've never seen a gallery, let alone the opening night, where every last work is sold already. (Actually, there was one unsold that lasted maybe 15 minutes before it too was tagged with a silver sticker.) But they were bought up for good reason. They're gorgeous. Tikki meets retro-space meets cyber-world meets pin-up girls (featured in every Naylor work)

That's not to say I don't like Tim's and Amanda's works anymore. I saw Tim there last night, and Amanda might have been, I'm not sure. But they didn't get the spotlight treatment I was hoping for. The two pieces Amanda did were not her best either.

I checked out some of these artists' work. I think I have different taste in art. I liked the sci-fi/fantasy stuff. I don't like the retro female portraiture. One of the artists created some visual busy-work, it seemed to me. It sounds like their work is very well received, though. I'm glad they are succeeding.

I'm afraid I might cover my walls at a single good show. I know nothing about evaluating art beyond just looking at it and seeing if it pleases me or strains my eyes. I do know better than to take a home decorator's approach to finding art to match upholstery, curtains and rugs.

I suppose there would be a time for that, but I think it makes more sense to decorate to highlight an artwork than the other way around. If you choose things you really like, how do you ever rotate a work out of your collection?
