Where Creators and Fans converge and frolic...
This week I will be at Comic Con, the world's largest orgy of popular culture. Fans of just about anything converge into a futuristic-looking convention center in San Diego. Only here will you find a Japanese manga lady standing next to a Stormtrooper, while Gene Simmons signs autographs in the background. Yes, and of course there will be Comics I'm not a huge fan really, but I do appreciate how placing images side by side to convey change can be useful in making other Art forms, and can be a great Art form in its own right.
Everyone at Comic Con has these things in common: a willingness, if not outright obsession, to take flights of fancy, and appreciation for creators, creativity & creations. So regardless if you're a Gene Simmons or a Ray Harryhousen fan, you're still celebrating a creator. Creators seem magical, on another plane of existence amplified by the Media. Yet, they may walk around like everyone else, because they too are fans of other creators. Comic Con attendees are fans, buyers, wannabe fans trying to become creators, or professionals who are now sharing their techniques or networking with peers to work on more exciting projects. It's a throbbing microcosm.
I will be going with a story guy / toy collector from Pixar, a manager woman extraordinaire, an understated illustrator, a wannabe comicbook inker, and a fledgling screenwriter. (Me? I think I'm a professional generalist).
Stay tuned...
